Obese Nation: Is Your Weight Causing You to Miss Out?

By Anne Keckler | February 9, 2008

You are probably already aware of the health risks of obesity. Not only are you more inclined to suffer from various diseases such as diabetes, cancer, arthritis, asthma, gout and heart disease, even things like sleep apnea effect overweight people more frequently, and it is thought to contribute to depression. But have you thought about the other effects of obesity?

If you are overweight you have likely found that there is some activity you are unable to enjoy because of your size. My son was recently telling me that bicycles aren’t made for people over 250 pounds. A lot of exercise equipment isn’t intended for people over 300 pounds. There are limits to how much weight a horse can carry, which varies from 220 pounds to 250 pounds. The Wii Fit has a weight limit of 300 pounds.

Some employers have weight limits for hiring. The US DEA has a weight limit of 250 pounds. EagleMed has a weight limit of 220 pounds for a medical flight specialist. And while many people have sued on the basis of fat discrimination, this will not prevent others from judging you based on your size. In fact, at least one study showed that “attractiveness emerged as an asset regardless of job type or gender of employee.” One state even wants to pass a law to prohibit certain restaurants from serving obese people! I find it appalling that people judge others by appearance. We’re not talking about grooming and cleanliness here, but simply appearance.

If you are overweight, especially if you fall into the category of “obese,” you could be missing out on enjoyable activities, a better job, a promotion, or even a relationship.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Although 90% of people who lose weight gain it back in less than a year, scientists are learning more about weight gain, obesity, and weight loss all the time. With new breakthroughs in understanding how hormones effect our weight and body composition, the glycemic impact of various foods, and the awareness of positive psychology, there is hope for everyone.

I felt like I started this post on a negative note, and whenever I tried to turn it positive, it sounded like I was trying to sell something. I just want to leave you with some inspiration. This story made me cry. I want results like that for everyone I know. I want you to know that you have control over your life and your choices, and that you can remake yourself into whatever you want to be.

What do you think is the major culprit? The food? Technology? Lifestyle? Exercise?

I heard an interesting thing the other day. Back in the 60s and 70s when obesity was under 5%, over 60% of the population smoked and ate copious quantities of red meat, so all we’ve really done is traded one health problem for another.

The problem may be that a large percentage of people (like me) have an oral fixation and they need something in their mouth, and it doesn’t matter if it is cigarettes or food.

    Anyway, food for thought.
