Find Activities You Enjoy

This morning as I was reading about JD and Mac’s pursuit of a healthier lifestyle, including weight loss, over at Get Fit Slowly, I was reminded of the importance of finding enjoyable activities.

Exercise doesn’t have to be drudgery. Almost everyone can find some physical activity they will enjoy doing. If you can’t, I’ll talk about the most efficient exercises you can do, to get the best results out of a short workout, at a later time.

For now, think about some of the things you enjoy, and how you can incorporate them into your life now. When I first started getting back in shape, I had to find things that I could involve my family in.

The first thing I came up with was rollerskating. We took my son, who was five at the time, rollerskating for the first time on his birthday that year. Everyone enjoyed it, so we went somewhat regularly after that.

Soon after that, I remembered how much I used to enjoy lifting weights. I realize that a lot of people would consider it boring, but I always liked being in the gym, lifting heavy things. So I joined a gym. I even hired a personal trainer! I was on my way. I found time to go in the early mornings, before I did lessons with the children.

 Finally, I went back to dancing.  I’ve loved to dance since I was three years old and took ballet classes.  In my young adult life, in the midst of a nasty divorce, I took up ballroom dancing.  I became in instructor, and had a job I absolutely loved for five years!  Unfortunately, it wasn’t a career that is conducive to raising children.  But now I’m back to dancing for fun, and loving it!

Now it’s your turn. If you’re like most people in the United States today, you live a fairly sedentary lifestyle. Our reliance on technology reduces the amount of physical activity needed for daily living tasks.

So tell me, what do you enjoy doing? What activity have you enjoyed in the past that you’ve given up? What activity would you like to learn? What do you think you’d enjoy doing on a regular basis?

    I’ll agree with the importance of making activity/excercise a group event. The support, encouragement, and maybe even a touch of competition that you can get from sharing an activity makes maintaining the activity ever so much easier. I’m still looking for an activity my girlfriend as I can share.

    I work with a personal trainer now, and I’m loving it. After the workout, of course. *During* the workout is another story entirely. 🙂 But I love learning what my body can do, and what it resists.

    One of my planned rewards to myself for being successful is buying a bicycle. I used to ride for hours when I was a teenager, and I’m looking forward to zipping around my neighborhood–and beyond!–in the spring.

    If someone does exercise that isn’t fun, then they end up giving up on it most of the time. I enjoy working out at the gym…I always like the weightlifting classes we had in high school. Sadly, I could never get anyone to hang out with me at the gym on a consistent basis…until now. Another activity I enjoyed immensely as a kid was bicycling. I’ve got a spiffy mountain bike that I bought about 2 years ago sitting in the house collecting dust…but it won’t be for much longer. Once daylight savings time kicks in, I’m going to start riding after I get home from work. As far as group sports go, I’ve only been halfway decent at football and volleyball.

    I’ve thought about joining a gym, but I keep going back to my true love – horses. I try to ride 5 times a week and it is a somewhat strenuous activity when you are training a horse in a specific discipline, in my case, dressage (believe it or not, the horse doesn’t do ALL the work!). I am finding now, though, that I need more. So I am considering a Pilates class at a local dance studio. What do you think about that? Thanks for your insight. 🙂
